“Walking Each Other Home: The Ministry of Presence and Song for the Dying”

“Walking Each Other Home: The Ministry of Presence and Song for the Dying” is the name of the story I wrote about the Threshold Choir for Alta Magazine. I am thrilled that they included it in their premier 2021 “year in review print edition.” The online version will be coming out soon. Its not a travel story as most of my writings are but it was a “tale that needed a tell,” especially during these challenging covid times. I learned about the choir severa years ago when my best friend was dying and thought I would like to write about the amazing service this group is providing. The first choir started in the SF Bay area in the year 2000 with only 15 members and today they have 2,240 members and 150 chapters across eight countries. They’re all volunteers and provide their services free of charge.Alta magazine is a celebration and examination of all things about California and its environs: the lifestyle, the history, the people, the environment, the arts, the culture, the politics.Drawing on inspiration from magazines such as The New Yorker, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, Alta is smart, witty, literary, informative and newsy. Alta is a multimedia entity: a quarterly magazine, a daily website and social media, and a regular series of events featuring talks by interesting people. Above all, Alta treasures great journalism, great storytelling and beautiful images.A Hearst publication, Alta’s partners include the Center for Investigative Reporting, the Bay Area Book Festival, SFFILM, Litquake and others. https://www.altaonline.com/dispatches/a34777841/threshold-choir-songs-for-the-dying/
